Valley Stream Obama Storefront Needs Our Support–Volunteer–Give Us An Hour Each Week Until Election Day

So Much to Be Done, So Little Time Remaining
You and I hear it every day. The Obama/Romney race will be going to go down to the wire. We will soon (July 28) reach to 100 day mark and begin the countdown to Election Day! We get all heated up realizing the possibility that the frighties could be leading the country once again.  One survey that came out this week showing Mitt Romney leading Barack Obama by two points nationally.  President Obama continues to lead in the swing states, but Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida remain very close. New Yorker’s commitment is to support Obama in Pennsylvania. Here are three ways for you to make an important contribution–aside from mailing a check to the Obama campaign. This is hardly the time to be sitting on our collective butts.  Each of us has to do make a contribution.

Volunteer Time at Our Obama Storefront in Valley Stream

Those of you who supported Yes We Can! Long Island in 2008 by volunteering to maintain our storefronts in Bellmore and Glen Cove engaged hundreds of people who felt the need to pitch in to elect Barack Obama. Our storefront offices proved to be YWC!LI‘s most powerful means of engaging people. We used the locations to phone-bank to PA, to launch bus drives to Pennsylvania, to answer questions, and to distribute lawn signs and print materials. Long Islanders, south and north shores, found their way to the Obama storefronts and made significant contributions.

With the opening of the first 2012 Obama storefront on Long Island, located in Valley Stream,we once again are reaching out to you to become involved.  The storefront is located at 124 Brooklyn Avenue, facing onto Sunrise Highway.   The location is immediately east of the Dunkin Donuts on Sunrise Hwy. The hours are from 5:30 to 9:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and 12 noon to 9 pm, weekends.

The Town of Hempstead Democratic Committee is responsible for organizing this effort. Bob Young deserves tremendous credit for the time and effort he continues to put into this venture. Let’s not let him down. More important, let’s not let our president down. I will be at the storefront on Thursday evenings.  Join me.  If that evening does not work for you, select another time–but do your part.  We are asking for an hour a week to do the little things that can mean so much.

Contact Matt Hymes if you have have any questions about what and how you can contribute by volunteering time at the Valley Stream storefront.

All Aboard!!
**********

No excuses.  Our next bus to PA will leave from our Valley Stream storefront (possibly from the LIRR parking area across Sunrise Hwy).  YWC!LI and the Town of Hempstead Democratic Committee Obama Working Group have reserved thirty seats for our members.

The bus will leave at 7:30 a.m. next Saturday, July 28 (the hundred day mark).  Return approximately 7:30 p.m. Some people are great at making phone calls while others want to get their feet on the ground and talk with people face-to-face. For the latter group, this is a great opportunity.

Upset about voter suppression? Aware that upwards of 750,00 voters in PA alone stand to lose their opportunity to vote? Then get yourself and the bus driver in gear! OFA‘s Charles Khan describes our role in PA as knocking on doors and registering voters between noon and 4:30 p.m.  There will be an OFA orientation on the bus and another when greeted by the PA local team.  There’s water and chips on the bus; most people get food around 4:30 and eat either on the bus or while they are waiting for the return trip home.

If you will be boarding the July 28 bus, click here to inform Charles Khan.  Prefer to drive? Contact Charles Khan (above)  to let him know your intentions and to learn the particulars for the day.  Each of us has to do make a contribution.

Host an Obama Meet-Up at Your Home

So there’s phonebanking for some, travel to PA for others.  How about hosting an informal meet-up at your home? I love these events. They are powerful, energizing, and informative. These are typically small gatherings that engage people you know–friends and neighbors–to share and to learn.

Please recognize that phonebanking, traveling, and hosting are not mutually exclusive events.

Not only do we encourage small, intimate gatherings, we will assist you if you are so inclined but feel you need some assistance.  Take a look at this piece submitted by an Obama supporter: Click on this link to get a personal perspective on a house party.

Make sure to create the event on MYBO .  It’s a breeze to plan an event and post it for people to see.

If I can fit it into my schedule, I would be available to speak or to facilitate discussion. Contact me

In your living room, at the kitchen table, or in the backyard, local meet-ups work.
