Rep. Peter King’s hearings on Islamic radicalization: Fuel for the bigots

Richard Cohen in his Op-Ed piece in the Washington Post makes a compelling argument that contrary to Peter King’s assertions, the Muslim community has been the number one source of tips exposing terrorist plots by Muslims in the USA. Mr. Cohen cites an expert on terrorism from the Univ. Of North terrorism, Charles Kurzman, who reported that 40% of tips, which foiled terrorist plots, came from the Muslim community; while only 9% came from undercover agents! Cohen concludes that these hearings set a dangerous precedent to investigate specific religious groups and have the potential to further alienate this community resulting in less cooperation with authorities.

King is setting a dangerous precedent. The government has no business examining any peaceful religious group because a handful of adherents have broken the law. If it did, it would be past time to look into the Roman Catholic Church, which clearly was – or maybe still is – concealing the sex crimes of priests and others.”
“In this country, much of the internal threat comes from a very small number of addled young men whose incompetence is often just plain awe-inspiring. They no more represent the American Muslim community than some randy priest does Peter King.

When one looks at the Inquisition and why it targeted the Jews, this
was after the Catholics were targeted, similarities between this dark
period in history and what Representative Peter King is about to do,
hold hearings to investigate Islam thus targeting the Muslim population
in this Country, can be seen. Eugene Robinson’s blog, find it below,
discusses what King is about to do and that it looks very much like the
inquisition of the 16th. and 17th centuries but with different players.

Look up the Inquisition and you will find that one of the main reasons
it began targeting the Jews was due to the writings of Maimonides, you
can find this on the site The Jewish Virtual Library. I am not in any
way condoning what those who perpetrated the attacks on our Country in
2001 did, those terrorist deserve all of our wrath. I only want to
show that a persecution of a religious sect, a group of people etc.
comes via propaganda. We Jews were many times the target of that kind
of propaganda which led to the deaths of millions of Jews, The
Holocaust. Niemoller , a Pastor in Berlin in 1939, wrote a poem that
essentially tells us that we all need to stamp out vicious propaganda
and that we all must stand by one another or we are doomed to have no
    one speak for us.

Peter King is doing the wrong thing. He is pandering to the Right and to
others who do not want to and are unwilling to see that we should not
paint a group of individuals like the Muslim population here in the
United States with such a broad brush. He has allowed hate, and a
vicious racist bias to color his world. There are ways other than
targeting a group, a race of people, to obtain information that would
assist our Country in defending itself against possible terrorist
threats, an Inquisition is not one of them. I add that Eugene Robinson’s Blog titled ” The American Inquisition 2011″ is another good read.
