Deficits are abstract; jobs are concrete

A big debate is underway in the White House between President Obama’s economic and political advisers over whether to focus on economic stimulus in order to create more jobs or deficit reduction. Leading the charge of the deficit hawks is Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, who calls for greater deficit reduction to ease qualms of voter who are in an anti-deficit, anti-spending mood. To Emmanuel, this is “smart politics.” Ryan Grim sees it differently:

It’s an odd political strategy because Axelrod knows that if it succeeds, it will be both bad policy and bad politics.
