Krugman: Obama Versus the Corporations

The Old Enemies

So here’s how it is: They’re as mad as hell, and they’re not going to take this anymore. Am I talking about the Tea Partiers? No, I’m talking about the corporations.

Much reporting on opposition to the Obama administration portrays it as a sort of populist uprising. Yet the antics of the socialism-and-death-panels crowd are only part of the story of anti-Obamaism, and arguably the less important part. If you really want to know what’s going on, watch the corporations.

How can you do that? Follow the money — donations by corporate political action committees.

Look, for example, at the campaign contributions of commercial banks — traditionally Republican-leaning, but only mildly so. So far this year, according to The Washington Post, 63 percent of spending by banks’ corporate PACs has gone to Republicans, up from 53 percent last year. Securities and investment firms, traditionally Democratic-leaning, are now giving more money to Republicans. And oil and gas companies, always Republican-leaning, have gone all out, bestowing 76 percent of their largess on the G.O.P.

Tea Party individuals think we can go back to the gold standard, not have taxes and our nation can prosper. Despite the utter insanity in that idea, the shock of it all is that so many buy into it, hook, line, and sinker. These folks who buy into it, buy gold from a commercial broadcast between a ranting comedian during the 5 o’clock hour (have no understanding about a financial bubble) are so susceptible to propaganda that they are once again being used by big corporations to further corporate goals.

During the “9/12″ rallies, so heavily promoted on that corporate opinion channel, I remember seeing someone be interviewed about Michael Moore’s Capitalism, probably on CNN. The interviewer didn’t mention the name of the movie, so they were free to agree with restraining corporate power, and would have been a Michael Moore fan if they didn’t have some deep seeded hatred for liberals… From day one of seeing the Tea Party, it has been clear to me that some percentage of the people involved would be liberals if they had some sense of the corporate control of the nations government.

Bringing corporate power and influence into the light should be a top concern for anyone who wants to create real change in this nation.
