I could not disagree more with the focus of Drew Western’s article. Drew claims that President Obama has not shown leadership over the 12 months since the election. Are you nuts?

When he took office 9 months ago the country was on the verge of entering a new depression. He led us out of that, near depression, within a few months. That was about 5 months ago! Than he began to address two festering wars, torture, climate change , which threatens the world’s environment; and health care, which has been the third rail for democrats for more than 60 years! The list goes on and on, after 8 years of the Bush administration.

Drew’s list of comparisons to great presidents is almost laughable if they weren’t so potentially damaging to our cause. When Drew says, “We were lucky FDR famously welcomed the hatred of those who had plunged the nation into the Great Depression because that freed him to regulate them.”, she forgets that the depression went on for another 8 years. Would she prefer 8 years of depression today, so that we can better regulate? I hope not. President Obama says he plans to regulate but only after careful thought and after the economy is back on its feet. That is practical leadership, not the unthinking leadership of George W. Bush.

When Drew says we might have a weak health care bill, she forgets to mention that her hero’s (FDR and Johnson) were not able to get through a health care bill of this scope and certainly not in this economic climate. And she fails to recognize the damage the “tea baggers” caused and we progressives contributed too, by not responding in a timely manner. This stretched out the health care debate another couple of unnecessary months. Or would she prefer we lose the Congress in two years much the way President Clinton did and make him just as ineffective president.

I think we need new terminology to encompass both right and left wing nuts. But I’m hard pressed to come up with a better reply that that given by the commanding general who defiantly replied to the Germans demand for surrender during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII: “nuts”.
