If you think the latest Marist and Rasmussen poll numbers for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand weren’t bad enough, the results of a just-published Newsday/News 12/Siena poll add to growing concerns over her unpopularity. This poll shows that only 23% of Long Islanders gave Gillibrand a favorable rating. Even worse, 27% rated her unfavorably and fully 50% of those polled say they still don’t know enough about her to form an opinion. All this despite the fact that nine months have passed since Gillibrand was appointed to the U.S. Senate by Governor Paterson.
To quote a seasoned political consultant, “Not too good” for Gillibrand. Talk about an understatement!
New Yorkers are clearly confused by Gillibrand’s flip-flopping on important issues. For example, does she still oppose restrictions on “cop-killer” bullets and assault weapons? What does Gillibrand really think about immigration reform? Does she regret her past advocacy for Big Tobacco? Even more important, is Gillibrand willing to go to the mat to fight for her core values, whatever they may be?
Many grassroots Democrats are increasingly concerned that Gillibrand is “just another politician.” They point to the “petition drives” organized by her campaign office, ostensibly in support of the public option (her first petition) or the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (her latest petition). Lots of folks believe these so-called “petitions” have nothing to do with supporting these worthy causes but rather are self-serving efforts to harvest e-mail addresses for Gillibrand’s election campaign.
